You’ve built a website that generates revenue – Congratulations! You’re now in the top 5% of Internet Marketers who actually make money with their affiliate websites.
However…. you know you could generate more revenue – but how?
Conversion Rate Optimization is a cool phrase that is thrown around a lot, but most people ignore it and continue trying to get higher rankings, more traffic and build out more pages to their website.
There’s nothing wrong with any of the above, but if you knew you could immediately generate double the amount of income from your site, without increasing traffic or rankings, wouldn’t you want to focus on that first?
The obvious answer is a resounding YES!
We’ll now dive into 5 changes you can make to your website, right now, that will result in more revenue.
1. Ensure Your Pages Are Optimized For Mobile
If you think it’s enough to have a website that’s mobile responsive, then you’re wrong. Even though a person may be able to view your site on their phone or other device, the elements of your site may not be properly placed and optimized for conversions.
As a matter of fact, many affiliate sites use various table plugins to show comparisons between different products and these tables typically convert a lot of visitors into customers. However, these tables can look quite skewed on mobile. For example:
As you can see, all that is shown is an oversized table where only the product image is shown. This image is not even linked to the actual product and the call to action buttons are not visible.
The actual image of the product is usually quite blurry, which creates a feeling that the item is of low value – leading to significantly lower conversion rates.
Therefore, you need to make some adjustments to your table plugin so that when viewed on mobile, it looks like the following:
As you can see, in this optimized version, the entire table displays on mobile, without any skewing.
The features and details about the product are visible, unlike the previous version, which makes it easy for the viewer to read and make a decision. Once they do, the CTA (call to action) is very clear and clickable – the “Buy Now” button.
Also, the product images are high quality, so the viewer automatically thinks it is a high quality product, worthy of buying.
Fortunately, you can still use the table plugins since they do increase conversions, however, be sure to test and customize them so they display as shown above.
You should also ensure that your product images are clickable and go to your affiliate link since this will also lead to increased conversions.
2. Add More Call To Action Buttons Throughout Your Pages
One of the simplest things you can do to immediately increase your revenue from your site, is to increase the number of call to action buttons, especially on the pages that generate the most money.
If your site is like most affiliate sites, then there are only 5 – 10 pages that generate 80% of your revenue. So, if you focus your efforts on improving those particular pages, then your revenue will see a significant jump.
A rule to abide by, is you should have no more than 3 CTA buttons for every 1,000 words on your page. It is a careful balance of not having too many or too few. If you put too many CTA buttons on your page, then you will negatively affect your SEO and make your website appear spammy.
Of course, don’t just add buttons and hope for the best. You should test to see what works for your site and once you do, you can expect a 20 to 30% increase in overall conversions.
Test The Buttons
In addition to adding more CTA’s, you should also test the buttons themselves, to see what style works best.
What should you test?
- Color – red, blue, green etc.
- The text – “Buy Now”, “Add To Cart”, “Click Here To Purchase”, “Click Here For The Best Price” etc.
- Text only buttons
3. Increase Trust – Add Credibility Indicators
Before a consumer purchases from a website, one of the first things they think about is whether they are safe buying from your site and if they can trust you.
Even if a consumer doesn’t actually think that, it has been embedded in the subconscious and it is critical that you address these fears if you want to increase conversions.
So, how can you do that?
For one, you can shift your site to https if you haven’t. You can also add security badges to your site as well as money back guarantees.
Here’s what they look like:
A 30 day money back guarantee helps to provide a source of comfort and will increase conversions. The actual number of people who would want their money back would be much less than how many more conversions you’d make by using this badge.
This safe checkout badge will also reassure consumers that their financial information is safe – leading to more conversions.
As an affiliate, you should speak to your affiliate representative to ensure the company provides the above credibility indicators and discuss various options if they don’t.
4. Highlight Product Testimonials
Nothing sells like a good testimonial. Chances are, you already have tons of testimonials – from people who have purchased the affiliate product and left feedback through your contact form. If you don’t have any of these, then you can simply contact your affiliate representative and ask them for testimonials that you can use.
Once you have these testimonials, you should highlight them on your money pages and these will dramatically increase your conversion rate. Adding a picture of the person to the testimonial will further increase conversion rates. However, many people aren’t too keen on putting a picture of themselves out there, so you should try your best to persuade them.
5. Switching To Higher Paying Affiliate Programs
This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people leave thousands of dollars on the table, simply because they don’t test different affiliate programs and move to higher paying ones.
If you’re an Amazon affiliate, then you may be hesitant to change because despite low commissions, the amount of trust people have in Amazon should lead to higher conversions. However… this isn’t true!
There are many Amazon affiliate sites that double their revenue, simply by switching to another affiliate program with a higher payout. You don’t even have to completely remove Amazon, but simply swap out half of your links and see the changes for yourself.
Even if you’re not an Amazon affiliate, you should test different affiliate programs and see what works for your site. Even if a product may have a slightly lower commission, it is still worth testing since it could possibly convert at a higher rate.
The only way to to know.. is to test!
There are so many things you can do to boost your affiliate revenue and the 5 changes above are just the beginning. There’s a whole world of CRO A/B split testing, website speed and copy-writing that will further increase conversions. However, start with these five changes and you’ll soon see a world of difference in your earnings.
